It’s a table, no it’s a shelf: DIY For women

There’s an age-old perception that men are the only ones who can put up a shelf, or fix the hinge of a door when it threatens to separate from the door. Enter the modern age; cue Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger, cue woman under the sink fixing a leak.

Warning: Writers at Work

“Writing is a fairly lonely business unless you invite people in to watch you do it, which is often distracting.” Marc Lawrence

I’ve classified myself a writer. I write poetry, plays, and a whole bunch of other things. Any self-respecting writer knows that you need to have a moment to yourself every now and then to churn out some of the most brilliant work since Charles Dickens. Yet, it seems society still thinks that if you are sitting by yourself you need company.

The Weekend When South Africa Lost Its Mind

It’s MY social media site isn’t it?

YOLO: Living young, wild and free

Say what?!

Who needs the police when you have body policing?

An article states that not even the fear of arrest can stop some men from masturbating in public, but women never do this. I have asked a few people and they have all seen men go at it in public at some point. I’d like to think that this is because women are “better”, but it points to an array of differences in the way that men and women are wired.

As RAMfest VI is approaching, some of us wonder…what happened to the RAMfest we knew?

As THE event on alternative music fan’s calendars, RAMfest V had it made by 2011. The international acts, Alkaline Trio and Funeral for a Friend, made the event that much more appealing to ticket-buyers and I felt like I was getting value for my money as a ticket to see your usual arena tour performance of one international act starts at R300. Funeral for a Friend is one of the most well known international alternative rock bands, while Alkaline Trio, with their self-aware, macabre-themed style of punk, enjoys more of a cult following (my friends and I included). The local acts were on par with the international ones, which was proof of the high standards RAMfest has set and achieved.

What is really killing us? And how can we stop it?

When people think about dying, I think we normally picture ourselves quite old, accepting the inevitable, or dying in a car crash. In reality, only 2.1% of deaths in the world are because of road accidents, says the World Health organization.  “Cardiovascular diseases kill more people each year than any others. In 2008, 7.3 million people died of ischaemic heart disease, 6.2 million from stroke or another form of cerebrovascular disease.” Heart diseases affect the low-, middle- and high-income countries. Low-income countries have other risk factors that are killers, the major causes of death also being lower respiratory infections, diarrhoeal diseases and HIV/AIDS. If you are reading this, though, you are probably not in circumstances where education and health services are scarce.

Are social websites making us dumber?

I’ve always had my suspicions about social networking and its effects on human behaviour. I mean, surely it can’t be too healthy to post regular updates about your thoughts and movements, or spend seven hours a day in front of a screen? Well, apparently it really isn’t, especially for kids.

Leave the sharks alone!

I often come across shark cage diving flyers in restaurants and small shops. I have also often taken a whole lot of the flyers and thrown them away. It’s not because I’m crazy, but because I think shark diving is an insulting activity to not only the sharks but to everyone who loves being in the water.

7th Wonder is another blunder

In November 2011, the provisional Seven Natural Wonders of the World were announced. They are South America’s Amazon, Vietnam’s Halong Bay, Brazil’s Iguazu Falls, South Korea’s Jeju Island, Indonesia’s Komodo National Park, Philippines’ Puerto Princesa River and, of course, South Africa’s Table Mountain. There is no doubt that these are all absolutely magnificent places. Before I rant, let me point out that everyone seems to have confused this provisional announcement as the final announcement.
